What is narcissistic abuse?

Most people encounter the term narcissism in the context of interpersonal conflicts but narcissism is a trait we all possess to a greater or lesser degree. Like all traits, it exists on a continuum.  Extreme narcissism diminishes our ability to see ourselves and the world as it is. It can impair our ability to enjoy healthy relationships with ourselves and others, which can harm our well-being. In cases of extreme narcissism, narcissistic abuse can occur.

Narcissistic abuse is a subtle kind of abusive power and control, distinguished by an underhanded pattern of aggression that includes acts of intentional degradation, sabotage, exploitation, and betrayal. These behaviors can cause serious psychological distress to anyone experiencing them. Perpetrators of this kind of aggression are commonly highly narcissistic while others may have full-blown narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). It is important to note that narcissistic personality disorder is a decidedly rare phenomenon and can only be diagnosed by a licensed mental health professional.

Our Mission

The aim of The Narcissistic Abuse Rehab Podcast is to help people recognize patterns of extreme narcissism so that they can better understand themselves and others. Knowledge is power and it is through awareness that we are able to make informed decision for our wellbeing.

Our content is created using current evidence from systemic research and a trauma-informed lens that realizes the impact of narcissistic abuse on the lives and health of people who experience it, while recognizing the reality that extreme narcissism is a post-traumatic stress adaptation.
