Narcissistic Mirroring

Narcissistic mirroring differs fundamentally from the healthy mirroring behaviors described in psychology, or the unconscious mimicry known as the chameleon effect. Instead of an instinctive tool for connection, it is an intentional and strategic reflection of a target’s personality, values, interests, and wounds. The ultimate aim is to artificially replicate what psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut described as the core human need to feel “seen, recognized and affirmed.” By fabricating this perfect echo, narcissistic mirroring weaponizes the very need to be known.
