Future Faking

Future faking is a manipulation technique used by narcissistic individuals during the devaluation phase of the abuse cycle to restore control over a target who is beginning to disengage. It involves the deployment of promises — of commitment, of change, of the relationship the target has always wanted — specifically to re-secure emotional investment after a conflict has threatened the manipulator’s supply. The promises are hollow: they are maintained only long enough to restore the target’s compliance, then abandoned. Future faking is effectively the love bombing of the devaluation phase — it does not restore the relationship to the idealization phase, but it restores the target’s hope that the idealization phase might return. Understanding future faking as a technique rather than as evidence of genuine desire for change is essential for anyone navigating the decision of whether to leave.
