Dysfunctional Narcissism

Dysfunctional narcissism describes narcissistic traits operating at the excessive, character-disordered end of the spectrum — the expression of narcissism that produces harm to others through entitlement, exploitation, manipulation, and the consistent prioritization of self-interest over genuine relational reciprocity.

It is distinguished from healthy narcissism — the normal, adaptive self-regard that Dr. Craig Malkin identifies as essential for a strong sense of self — and from deficient narcissism, in which insufficient self-regard produces echoism and chronic self-effacement.

Narcissistic Abuse Rehab draws on Dr. Malkin’s spectrum framework and Dr. George K. Simon’s character disturbance model to distinguish subclinical dysfunctional narcissism from clinical presentations that involve structural neurological differences.
